Although this book has humor it also involves racism, rape, prejudice, inappropriate language and also uses the word “nigger.” I have personally read this book back in high school; though I do not remember the controversial parts of this book I do remember enjoying reading it with the class. I do not recall it being too inappropriate for school however it was ten years ago and I may not have picked up on it. I found that this book got a 4/5 rating.
When this was first published in 1960 it became popular at a very quick speed and was known as a classic of modern American fiction. The book was a challenge in a lot of schools due to the controversial pieces however there were schools, like mine, that do allow this as reading material.
I personally would not mind giving this book to high school students to read. I do not feel it is appropriate for middle school or younger due to the controversial pieces that were earlier mentioned.
Thanks

Jacqueline Tisdale: It can be a controversial book, and needs to be taught to the appropriate class. There needs to be a lesson before the book is taught that stresses that the things that occur in the book are not appropriate and are not to be copied. This way the students are prepared to handle what it is they are going to read and are not in shock over it. I think this book could be appropriate for 8th graders as well as high schoolers. It all depends on the class the teacher has.
Ricki Lynch: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee In To Kill a Mockingbird one of the major events that happens is when Tom Robinson is accused of rape against a white girl. Due to the sensitive nature of this particular subject of rape I agree that this book would need to be taught with particular sensitivity that goes beyond the racism piece.
